When humidity levels spike, so do a host of foot-related concerns – from fungal infections and blisters to persistent skin irritation. Yet, many still opt for closed shoes made from non-breathable materials, trapping heat and moisture against the skin. The result? Discomfort, poor hygiene, and in some cases, chronic foot issues.

“In humid conditions, your choice of footwear can directly impact your foot health. Switching to open-toe or breathable footwear isn’t just about style. It’s about preventing the buildup of heat and moisture, which is the root cause of most skin and nail infections,” says Khairav Duggal, CEO of Chupps Footwear.

The Humidity–Foot Health Connection

In high-humidity regions like Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata, feet are often enclosed in synthetic shoes for long hours, creating the perfect breeding ground for fungal infections such as athlete’s foot and ringworm. Podiatrists warn that sweaty feet, combined with minimal ventilation, allow these conditions to spread quickly and become harder to treat.

Why Open-Toe Footwear Works

Open designs encourage air circulation, helping sweat evaporate faster and keeping skin dry. “It also reduces friction in commonly irritated areas like the toes and heel,” Duggal explains, “which can cut down on painful blisters and calluses, especially for those on their feet all day.”

What to Look For in Humid-Weather Footwear

Experts recommend considering these features:

  • Breathable materials – natural fabrics or modern ventilated polymers
  • Moisture-wicking linings – to keep feet dry longer
  • Good arch support – ergonomic designs are now widely available
  • Machine-washable styles – practical during monsoons
  • Anti-slip soles – to prevent falls on wet surfaces
  • Comfort-focused construction – cushioned footbeds and soft uppers for all-day wear

Beyond Comfort, Preventive Care

“Our feet have thousands of sweat glands, and neglecting them in humid weather can cause maceration, toenail fungus, and unpleasant odor,” Duggal notes. Dermatologists often see a seasonal spike in these complaints during monsoons and summer, most of which can be avoided by letting feet breathe.

The Industry Shift

Footwear brands are responding with innovations like antimicrobial linings, odour-resistant technology, and orthopedically informed designs that marry comfort with style. “We’re seeing a lifestyle shift where people prioritise wellness in everyday choices, and footwear is part of that,” Duggal adds.

Choosing open-toe footwear in humid climates isn’t just about staying cool. The right pair can prevent infections, reduce discomfort, and support better posture, making it one of the simplest yet most effective wellness upgrades you can make.
