The release note about the AirPods firmware update 6A326 and 6F8 talks about the impact that AirPods users can face if they don’t update to the latest version. “When your headphones are seeking a connection request to one of your previously paired devices, an attacker in Bluetooth range might be able to spoof the intended source device and gain access to your headphones,” Apple highlights in the note here.
Spoofing devices is a major concern, especially when the AirPods and other wireless devices support a long range, making it easier for bad actors to target. Installing the firmware is pivotal if you want to avoid falling into the trap, and connecting the Bluetooth headset to your iPhone could invariably leave you susceptible to further attacks.
